Someone told me I should look into applying for government grants because I am a single mom and student?

I am a full time student and single mom who is iving on a very low income. I am barely making it and all it would take is one major financial catastrophe to ruin me. I was told to look into applying for government or private grants, not just for educational purposes but apparently there are grant programs out there for everything from buying a car or home to starting a new business. I did some research and found that most of the grant programs on-line are scams so I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has received grant money for anything other than school? Can anyone tell me of any legitimate grant programs they are aware of or is this all just an unrealistic dream of receiving free money? Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
Here is a very polite but worthwhile suggestion.
Take all the hours and all the energy and all the time that you spend looking for free money, and work somewhere and earn a paycheck.
The world is full of people asking for free money and eventually, someone of you is going to have to work to provide money so that others can have the free income.
my sister had three, and three jobs! she got money to complete her education. Now, I bet she makes more then the first jerk that gave you an anwser.
is your Free source to FIND and APPLY for federal government grants. There are over 1,000 grant programs offered by all federal grant making agencies.
go to fastweb.com or gettuition.com. lots of scholarships!
I’m sorry that I do not have the exact program names at my disposal at this very minute, I just wanted to ’shoot you a line’ to let you know that, yes, there are real programs. These programs fall under minority’s,(yes they consider women a minority, not from me, please don’t be offended). Also there are student loans for single moms. Edit: Don’t pay any attention to the first answerer,(jerk!)
Go to or us.gov.
I hope you’ll find what you need.
Best of luck to you.
Only the scammers spread the lies that there are grants for personal use — so they can scam the gullible (and there are many)
The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.
Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.
For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.
There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.
You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.
Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.
Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs
